French National May 2002

France here we come!

French motorways saw us past Metz on our way South from Utrecht. Then we left for the RN roads (The morning saw us drive down the Côte D'Or - Beaune, Gevrey Chambertin .....… pity we couldn't sample at the Burgundy vineyards) towards the mustard centre of Dijon. Here we found our favourite Première Classe and had a rest.

The weather was warm. As we approached Bourg-en-Bresse we came across the most enormous silver coloured chicken on the roadside - no time to stop but we have a photo taken on the return trip.

French National Meetings

We go to the site at 2.30 p.m. - only to find that 5 p.m. was opening time. Well lots of people turned up and at 5 we went into the site - found our spot and the meeting began. Cars were coming in all the time and even, it seemed, all night.

The flea markets were good; food was excellent - the local baker had an oven on site and baked all day - and frog's legs, roast chicken, chops etc. were on offer all day and into the night in some cases. Well done to the organisers.

Music was in the marquee every night, so we were well entertained.

All day Wednesday and Thursday cars kept coming. Eventually, 1,400 or so signed in; tents were everywhere. Glad we got there early!! The area was full of lakes and little gems of villages and small towns.

On Friday an excellent convoy was organised to Lyon with Police controls and escorts. Everyone who went praised the organisation and came back full of the trip.

Saturday evening was the food tasting. We Brits between us had lots of sweets, elderflower cordial, cheeses and crackers, pickled eggs, bread, marmite, whisky cake, Christmas cake, tea bread, carrot cake …. oh and beer. It was a great success - we even avoided the rain that threatened.

On Sunday Bill and I had to leave, so did Roy and Joyce. We made our separate ways home after a wonderful meeting. Next year it is between Bordeaux and Biarritz - not sure of the dates yet but it is worth a journey as the Michelin Guides say! (I need confirmation from a religious calendar). This is the end of the U.K. half-term week. It needs an overnight ferry to Le Havre and one night stop to get there without thrashing down motorways all the day.
